July provides us with great weather to head outdoors for a hike, camping, swimming, and more, but it is important to be aware of a variety of ways to stay safe! Utilize these tips, ideas, and resources below for a fun, safe and healthy summer!
Summer Safety Tips:
- Beat the Heat – Look out for heat exhaustion and heat stroke symptoms:
- Heat exhaustion: pale/ashen or moist skin, muscle cramps, weakness, nausea/vomiting, rapid heart rate
- Heat stroke: If body temperature is over 101 degrees, rapid breathing, irrational or belligerent behavior, convulsions, unresponsiveness -- call 911 immediately
- Sun Safety – Use sunblock that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. SPF should be 30 or higher. UV rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm.
- Firework Safety – Leave fireworks to the experts! Be careful with sparklers as they can burn up to about 2,000 degrees which can ignite clothes & cause severe burns.
- Water Safety – Do not underestimate the power of water; even rivers and lakes can have undertows. Never leave children unattended.
- Boating – Life jackets are essential! Be familiar with state boating laws.
- Keep Hydrated – Be sure to drink water every 15 minutes when outdoors to avoid dehydration.
Looking for Summer Activity Ideas?
-
Visit a local fair or farmer’s market - get some exercise from walking around and buy some fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables
-
Host an outdoor yard game day/night (bags, Frisbee, etc.) – great way to stay active and connect with friends and family
-
Make homemade popsicles - get your favorite juice (orange juice, cranberry, apple, etc.) and using ice cube trays or dixie cups, fill with juice/pieces of fruit, freeze for an hour, add popsicle sticks, freeze overnight, & then enjoy!
-
Start a garden - with just an old egg carton, potting soil or coffee grounds, seeds, water, and sun, you can plant your very own garden.
-
Go on a picnic - pack a healthy, homemade lunch and pick your favorite outdoor spot and enjoy.
-
Take a one-day road trip - explore the beauty of your own state or surrounding states. A mini vacation can help reconnect with yourself and others.
