May: Mental Well-Being
Lifestyle Tips to Help Your Mental & Physical Well-Being
- Physical activity in any form is a great way to keep you physically healthy as well as improving your mental well-being. Even a short burst of walking 10 minutes increases our mental alertness, energy, and positive mood.
- Nutrition is a factor that influences the way we feel. A healthy diet can influence the development, management and prevention of numerous mental health conditions.
- Smoking has a negative impact both on mental and physical health. Many with mental health problems believe that smoking relieves symptoms, but these effects are only short-term.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month which focuses on how you think, feel and act, as well as your emotional and social well-being. Did you know that one in four of us will experience a serious problem with our mental well-being at some point in our lives? This means it is highly unlikely that any of us will make it through life without having a problem or being close to someone who does. It is important to highlight that our mental well-being and physical well-being should be thought of together. Poor physical health can lead to an increased risk of developing mental health problems. Similarly, poor mental health problems can negatively impact our physical health, leading to an increased risk of some conditions.
Do you need help? If your mental or emotional state quickly gets worse, or if you are worried about someone you know – help is available. Remember, you are not alone; talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to recovery and good well-being!
To highlight this Health Awareness topic and additional topics, May’s edition features a Live Well, Work Well newsletter, a Wellness calendar, and a variety of lifestyle resources to help you be happy and healthy – mentally and physically- both at work and at home!
In good health,
