June 2019: Healthy Habits

Summer Healthy Habit Ideas:

  • Have breakfast – This jump-starts your metabolism and stops you from overeating later
  • Stay hydrated – Drink a minimum of 8 ounces of water for every hour spent outside. Some foods can help you keep hydrated such as cucumbers, strawberries, carrots, cantaloupe, and watermelon!
  • Take an Exercise Break – Just 30 minutes of walking 5 times a week is great for your body and mind
  • Learn Something New – New skills keep your brain healthy - sign up for a dance class, creative writing workshop, learn a new language, or try a new sport!
  • Stop Smoking – Your body repairs itself quickly - as soon as 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure improve
  • Sleep Well – A good night’s sleep improves your mood, sharpens memory and focus, and helps you learn new things. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep a night for adults.

Eat Well | Live Well | Be Well

The everyday choices we make can help us live healthier, happier and more fulfilling lives. The CGO Employee Wellness Newsletter provides monthly resources and education on a variety of topics like nutrition, exercise, emotional health and resilience, prevention and more. Our hope is that this information empowers you to incorporate sustainable healthy habits for a lifetime of good health and well-being!

With the start of summer this month, June includes a variety of ways to incorporate daily healthy habits for a great summer. What you do today will impact your health and quality of life now and in the future; by creating healthy habits, you can reduce your risk for the most common, costly, and preventable health problems – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. When we set large goals – such as completely removing sugar - they typically are not well-sustained and fizzle away where we jump right back into that habit; however, if you start with small, reasonable goals you will see that day-by-day those habits grow to be a part of your daily routine long-term. Maybe you have already tried to eat better, get more exercise or sleep, quit smoking or reduce stress; we all know these lifestyle changes are not easy but knowing your habits, making a plan, staying on track and being patient with these changes are all steps in the right direction! What healthy habits will you incorporate this summer?

June’s edition features a Live Well, Work Well newsletter, a Wellness calendar, and a variety of tips & tools to incorporate daily healthy habits for a fun and healthy summer!
