October 2019: Women's Health

Prevent Risk Factors to Live a Longer, Healthier, and Happier Life

Did you know that many of the leading threats to women’s health can be prevented? The top U.S. causes of death for women include heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and unintentional injuries (CDC). Healthy habits are the best way to reduce risk factors and sustain healthy lifestyles. With Breast Cancer Awareness front-and-center this month, it is also important to recognize women’s health prevention overall in order make an impact on all of the preventable conditions. Utilize these tips and resources below to take control of risk factors and to live a longer, healthier, and happier life!

While You Cannot Eliminate Risk Factors Like Family History, You Can Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle to Thrive, Not Just Survive:

  • Visit the Doctor - preventive visits and age/gender-specific screenings with your doctor are proactive ways to be aware of your overall health and risk factors.
  • Move More - exercise can help lower your risk of heart disease and stroke; it may also lower your risk of certain types of cancer. Ideas: walking, swimming, dancing, and running.
  • Healthy Diet - vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fiber foods and lean protein are great sources of nourishment. Limit: foods high in saturated fat, added sugar, and sodium.
  • Don’t Smoke - ask your doctor for help! Tobacco cessation benefits begin within 20 minutes of your last cigarette! Avoid exposure to second-hand smoke.
  • Limit Alcohol - consume in moderation: a drink is 1.5 oz. of standard 80-proof liquor, 12 oz. of beer, or a 5 oz. glass of wine.
  • Buckle Up - seat belts and helmets lower your risk of unintentional injuries.
  • Manage Stress - if you feel stressed and/or anxious, your daily healthy habits and immune system may suffer. Take steps such as yoga, meditation, and exercise to reduce stress in healthy ways.

Breast Cancer Awareness - What You Need to Know & How to Support:

  • What You Need to Know - Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths for women in the US; approximately 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. Utilizing the healthy habits above can help reduce your risk. Visit with your doctor if you are concerned about your risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month - donate to a charity that provides support and services to those affected by breast cancer, participate in a fundraising event to support breast cancer research, and spread awareness about this disease.
