3 ways your employees can access medications for free - Part 2

Last week we started a 3-part series to teach you how your employees can access medications for free AND you save a ton of cash in the process.

We dug into Patient Assistance Programs and showed how one employer was able to save $24,500 every time their employee filled one drug, Stelara.

However, not every employee can access Patient Assistance Programs because only employees that fall below certain income thresholds will qualify. But that same drug can also be sourced internationally for $7,500...still a monster savings compared to the $25,000 sticker price.

If you want to learn more, watch the following clip where we dig into the international sourcing of prescription drugs. And yes, it's safe.

Transcript
yeah International sourcing is personal importation right so think about obtaining your brand name medication so high cost brand and Specialty medications we're not talking about the 85 to 90 percent of generics that are being filled at your local pharmacies or through mail order here we're talking about that 10 percent of medications that are brand that um you can get from places tier one countries like Canada or sometimes 50 to 60 percent less than you can procure them in the United States now there's a lot of reasons why you can do that but ultimately it's tapping into um the same drug manufactured by the same manufacturer it's just not getting the substantial up charge by being sent to a United States Pharmacy and are extremely broken uh supply chain system in America because I'm working with an employer right now and and um they're probably watching uh they had uh another employer head of Solara claim uh on their plan and they asked me what you know what would that cost if we sourced that drug internationally because we know that this drug was taken by somebody who probably would not meet the income thresholds right so we weren't able to Source this through patient assistance but that same 25000 drug 75000 and so the plan saves a ton of money now you know Trevor right we we know we can't mandate this right this is a this is a voluntary type of program for an employee so that's that's why we make it free we try to incent people to take these drugs which is literally the exact same drug exact same Packaging manufactured at the exact same place we incent them through zero dollars make it free because if you're going from twenty five thousand to seven thousand five hundred I think you right we can all agree it's a win-win for everybody to to waive that co-paying and something to try to make that right decision yeah and I think one thing I'd add there Mike that um it's not just 25 it's still ours not just twenty five thousand dollars a year it's twenty five thousand dollars a month or every couple months so when you're when you're reducing that cost to 7 500 for the health plan I mean you know that's fifth grade math that even my son can do to go that's a good idea now where we see some issues in these programs is vendors and partners that start taking large fees in the middle and not taking into account the rebates of their health plan so it's one of those things where with the right partners with the right programs that are focused on the patient you can really do a good job in this you know what we call is like granular active plan management right instead of just writing a premium check and saying hopefully everybody's doing what we want them to do this is patient by patient active plan management helping these folks make good health plan decisions that are not only good for them but good for the plan

About the Author

Mike Kroupa, Self-Funding Insurance Expert

I grew up in a house that was constantly under construction and the experience helped me uncover one of my passions, remodeling. After running a successful remodeling business with my brother during college, I decided I wanted to keep this as a hobby. Instead, I took my advisor’s recommendation and started down the actuarial path, which ultimately led me to insurance.

Since then, I have focused my career teaching employers how to better manage their health insurance plans. I found myself frustrated year after year of doing the same thing because it didn’t feel like I was making an impact. Healthcare costs were continuing to increase, and it felt like the only options employers were left with was increasing deductibles, increasing contributions, and switching carriers.

There was a turning point for me in 2020 as I found Health Rosetta, an ecosystem for scaling adoption of practical fixes to our health care system. As my clients started adopting these fixes, I found myself getting passionate about what I was doing for the first time. Then I realized my hobby of remodeling was driving the passion because I was remodeling health plans. Even better, I was having an impact because patients (employees, spouses and children) were getting the best care they ever have and saving a lot of money in the process.
