Smoothies are a great way to pack a whole lot of goodness into one drink. Many store bought smoothies, or even the ones we make on our own can be dis-proportioned with excess fruit that puts our blood sugar on a roller coaster ride and leaves us hungry just a few hours later. Although fruit is a nutrient dense food, we want to incorporate other food components to make a well-balanced, satiating meal or snack.

Here are the components to check off in each smoothie recipe:

  1. Base- Unsweetened version of either coconut milk or almond milk. Sometimes, I even just use water or coffee!
  2. Fats- This might be ½ an avocado, 1 Tablespoon of nut butter or 1-2 Tablespoon of flax or chia seeds. These fats will help blunt a blood sugar spike and keep us satiated for hours.
  3. Protein-There are so many powdered protein sources on the market. I usually go with either a collagen or grass fed whey option and add 1-2 scoops. Cottage cheese and unsweetened Greek yogurt work too. Protein will give you additional satiating signals and boost dopamine and serotonin production.
  4. Fruit- Aim for just ¼-1/2 cup of fruit. Berries are great because they are low in sugar, high in antioxidants and high in fiber with the additional seeds.
  5. Greens/Veggies - Great way to sneak in kale, spinach, or even frozen cauliflower. The fiber will feed our gut bacteria and help keep our digestive tract moving. Two handfuls is good!
  6. Extras: Spices: Cinnamon, turmeric, Superfood powders: cacao, spirulina, acai, matcha, chlorophyll

    *A Note on Topping Granola* Some granola’s are loaded with sugar. Be mindful of portions (recommend ¼ cup)
