The key to creating the best health insurance benefits package

Before I became a Benefits Advisor, I used to own a remodeling business with my twin brother. While we did much of the work ourselves, we also acted as the General Contractor.

And after doing it enough, three common themes emerged for success:

  1. Control - For the homeowner, this meant setting a budget. Otherwise, the project could spiral and no one is happy when they spend more than anticipated.
  2. Align - This meant using experts when needed. There's value in being a jack of all trades but hiring the right subcontractors means getting a complicated job done on time and on budget.
  3. Reward - The happiest homeowners were the ones who loved the final product. There is no better reward than that.

Fast forward to my Benefits career and I learned the same principles hold true for creating the best health insurance benefits package. Curious how I'll tie this all together? Watch the video above.

Today's topic is self-funded Insurance good for employees it's set up the right way self-funded insurance is great for employees but they may not know this Because unless you the employer directly tell that employee that you are self-funded they're not going to know the difference moving from fully insured to self-funded is basically an administrative change that happens behind the scenes so why is self-funding good for employees it's because when you're self-funded you have the ultimate control of your health plan this control affords you the ability to align your health plan with partners that have your best interests in mind and when you align your health plan with Partners like this your costs will go down or they'll go up less than they otherwise would this directly impacts your employees because the sustainable Health Plan means that your employees don't have to shoulder the burden every year of increase in deductibles increase in employee contributions and constantly switching insurance carriers that's just the start as well because when you can control your health plan and align with the right Partners now you have an opportunity to do something truly different and Implement a benefits Rewards program and these rewards are pretty simple it means make Health Care Free for employees when they make good health care decisions for example make Health Care Free when your employees choose a high quality provider because everybody wins in that scenario make it free when they choose the 300 MRI versus the three thousand dollar MRI because of twenty seven hundred dollar savings far away is what their deductible or copay would have been so self-funding can be great for employees but if all you do is sell fun and you don't get control by aligning with the right Partners your employees are not going to reap the benefits they're certainly not going to get any opportunities for free health care so my advice is if you want self-funding to be good for your employees when you start thinking about making that switch from fully insured to self-funded don't just slap a new coat of paint on your health plan consider remodeling your health plan with the right partners.

About the Author

Mike Kroupa, Self-Funding Insurance Expert

I grew up in a house that was constantly under construction and the experience helped me uncover one of my passions, remodeling. After running a successful remodeling business with my brother during college, I decided I wanted to keep this as a hobby. Instead, I took my advisor’s recommendation and started down the actuarial path, which ultimately led me to insurance.

Since then, I have focused my career teaching employers how to better manage their health insurance plans. I found myself frustrated year after year of doing the same thing because it didn’t feel like I was making an impact. Healthcare costs were continuing to increase, and it felt like the only options employers were left with was increasing deductibles, increasing contributions, and switching carriers.

There was a turning point for me in 2020 as I found Health Rosetta, an ecosystem for scaling adoption of practical fixes to our health care system. As my clients started adopting these fixes, I found myself getting passionate about what I was doing for the first time. Then I realized my hobby of remodeling was driving the passion because I was remodeling health plans. Even better, I was having an impact because patients (employees, spouses and children) were getting the best care they ever have and saving a lot of money in the process.
