Winter Storms: Coping with Power Outages

Each new season brings its own unique risks that a business must be prepared for. In the winter, weather condition such as severe cold, blizzards, and ice storms present the possibility of power failure. This means you may be without heat for an extended period of time. Subsequently, the temperature inside your business may fall below freezing and can lead to a number of problems, such as freezing pipes and water damage.

Every business owner should have a plan in place to prepare themselves for this risk. The first thing they could do is invest in a generator. It doesn’t have to be powerful enough to run the entire building. Just enough to keep the heat can go a long way toward insolating your business from potential loss.

If you don’t have a generator, and you do happen to lose power for a period of time you may want to shut off and completely drain your sprinkler system. This will help prevent your pipes from bursting. Another hazard that people may sometimes overlook is the buildup of snow on your roof. Make sure that your roof is stable and can withstand heavy amounts of snow. If it can be done safely, clear snow and ice from your roof to prevent buildup. You certainly don’t want your roof imploding on you and your business.

Unfortunately, sometimes even when you prepare and take all the proper precautions, you still end up experiencing a loss. This is why it is important to make sure you have the coverage necessary to help your business withstand such losses.
