Supporting Employees Through Personal Leave: Tips for Managers

Leave of absence can be a challenging time for both employees and employers. Whether it's related to a medical issue, family emergency, or other personal reasons, navigating a leave of absence requires sensitivity, understanding, and support from Managers. It’s important for employers to set clear expectations with the employee before the leave (if possible).

There are many different strategies for Managers to support employees during their time off.

Respect Privacy and Confidentiality:

Respecting the employee's privacy and confidentiality during their absence is the number one rule. Avoid sharing details of their situation with other employees unless necessary for operational reasons. Maintaining confidentiality helps build trust and demonstrates your commitment to supporting their well-being.

Communicate with Compassion:

During times of personal leave, compassionate communication is key. Reach out to the employee to express your support and let them know that you're there to assist them throughout the process should they need anything. Providing clear information about their leave entitlements up front will be useful for the employee to have on hand while out.

Work with HR:

Ensuring HR remains updated enables them to handle necessary paperwork such as FMLA documentation or assist the employee in applying for Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits.

Offer Flexible Solutions:

Understand that each employee's situation is unique and may require different accommodations. Be flexible in offering solutions that meet their needs.

Provide Access to Resources:

Make sure employee’s are aware of relevant resources and support services that can assist them, such as employee assistance programs (EAPs). Many EAPs offer a variety of services such as, counseling services, or community support groups. Providing access to these resources shows your commitment to their well-being not only at work, but beyond the workplace.

Plan for Return to Work:

Start planning for the employee's return to work well in advance. Discuss with the employee any accommodations they may need upon their return. Prepare the team for their return and provide any necessary training or updates to ensure a smooth transition back to work.

Supporting employees through personal leave requires empathy, communication, and flexibility from Management. By using these tips, you can demonstrate your commitment to your employee’s well-being, while create a supportive work environment for employees.
